چکیده

We measured energy distributions of electrons emitted in the interaction of slow Kr and Na with Al surfaces. The data allow to correlate emission intensities with spectral signatures of electron excitation processes. Our results indicate that electron promotion processes leading to the excitation of Al target atoms plays the dominating role in kinetic electron emission from Al surfaces by slow ions. In the case of Kr ions, electron promotion occurs in close atomic collisions between recoiling target atoms. For Na projectiles, a significant contribution to Al excitation comes also from a vacancy transfer process in asymmetric collisions involving ions that have survived neutralization in the interaction with the surface. 2006 Elsevier B.V. Plasmon excitation and electron promotion in the interaction of slow Na ions with Al surfaces

We studied the energy distributions of electrons emitted in the interaction of slow Na ions with polycrystalline Al surfaces. To study sub-threshold plasmon excitation we performed measurements as a function of emission angle which showed the excitation of bulk plasmons, confirming the kinetic nature of the excitation process. Electron spectra show narrow transition lines due to Auger decay in ...

Kinetic electron emission in the interactions of slow ions with MgO surfaces

We report experimental energy distributions and yields of electrons emitted from MgO surfaces under the impact of slow noble gas and sodium singly charged ions at varying incident energies. At impact energies below 1 keV, electron spectra are nearly independent of ion type and energy. A tail of highenergy electrons is observed to grow at higher impact energies. The results are explained in term...

Identification of mechanisms of ion induced electron emission by factor analysis

Introducing the use of the Factor Analysis method to analyze electron emission spectra we identify different mechanisms for electron emission from clean Al surfaces under bombardment by Ar and Li ions. The analysis of the energy electron emission distributions and their dependence on incoming ion energy allows separation of the direct contribution of Auger neutralization from that of plasmon de...

Kinetics of ion and prompt electron emission from laser-produced plasma

We investigated ion emission dynamics of laser-produced plasma from several elements, comprised of metals and non-metals (C, Al, Si, Cu, Mo, Ta, W), under vacuum conditions using a Faraday cup. The estimated ion flux for various targets studied showed a decreasing tendency with increasing atomic mass. For metals, the ion flux is found to be a function of sublimation energy. A comparison of temp...
